We left Phoenix with a mixture of elation, anticipation, and a dash of dread. We knew we were going to be on an arduous 14 hour flight that would never end and fully expected to be dead on our feet by the time we landed in Sydney. Much to our delighted surprise, the beginning of our journey didn't match our expectations. I'm not entirely sure if that is a good or bad omen but since the effects were positive, let's call it good and say it foretells of unexpected treats for the whole way through, shall we? The flight really wasn't that bad; our seats were fairly comfortable, we had good movies to watch, and we just slept most of the time. Oh yeah, and we had free beer on the flight (go Aussies!) which didn't hurt. We had a smooth landing and going through customs was a breeze; off to a great start I'd say!
We took a cab to our hotel in the historic "The Rocks" district where Sydney was first colonized by the English in the late 1700's. We got to our hotel (the first and oldest in Sydney... and yes, I am picking up lots of spiritual activity), dropped off our bags and went to find some brunch before check-in time. I was amazed to see just how centrally located we are! We are less than a mile from the famous Sydney Opera House and have a killer view of the Harbor Bridge from our bathroom window. So we found a vegan restaurant with a terrible name, "Iku Wholefood" (Iku? Really? I mean, it sounds kinda, well, icky) but who am I to judge? The food couldn't have been better and I could care less if you called it the Enema Cafe, I am SO going there again!
After brunch, Keevin and I checked in and got reacquainted with a sense of human decency when we had our showers and got changed. We then went for a tour of the Sydney Opera House; can you say "incredible"? The truth that "We are in Australia, baby!" really hit us then and our jet lag was temporarily eclipsed by our acute awareness of this utterly fabulous fact. This journey that's been a year in the making is finally happening!!! I have so many feelings about it and so many spiritual insights about the journey so far I'd like to share but jet lag has the best of me and the pillow is relentlessly calling my head like double-fudge chocolate mousse cake calls a fat chick. I will post pictures tomorrow when I see one, not two, computer screens in front of me and share some of my spiritual impresisons as well. Good night (or day or whatever it is!).
